Ofcourse we know of Karin van den Berg's thesis for a while now. But now it has grabbed the attention of all those edubloggers in the rest of the world: "This thesis by Karin van den Berg was part of her Master's program at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. It does a nice job of boiling down many of the previous attempts at developing criteria".

MSN kost een lesuur
I just found a fine example of the digital divide between digital immigrants and digital natives, that we learnt of (again!) yesterday at the SURF Onderwijsdagen.

Een school gebruikt een bellijst (ken je dat nog?) om ziektes van docenten door te geven, maar ja, leerlingen gebruiken MSN. Maar eigenlijk is het gewoon een grappenmaker die de boel mooi tuk heeft gehad door ergens middenin de lijst iemand te bellen en vervolgens heeft diegene het via MSN verder gestuurd.
Waarom gebruikt die school eigenlijk niet MSN om het bericht rond te sturen.

H2O Playlists: A Social Bookmarking Tool for Education
Nog een interessant verslag van een ander kluppie edutrippers. Het heet dus H2O Playlists.
Je kunt het vergelijken met je iTunes playlists (voor die mensen die een iPod hebben of hebben gekocht in Orlando). Echter, op je H2O playlist sla je vooral verwijzingen naar informatiebronnen op.
Wat echt handig zou zijn, is dat je zo'n lijst zou kunnen exporteren naar referenties volgens bijvoorbeeld de APA richtlijnen, zodat die je zo kunt gebruiken in je artikel of boek. Ook del.icio.us kan dit volgens mij niet.
Ik ben dus nu vrij veel tijd kwijt om in mijn hoofdstuk voor de Edutrip publicatie de juiste referenties aan te maken (overigens maakt het systeem van eindnoten dat ook niet gemakkelijker). Dat moet handiger kunnen! Iemand enig idee?
Anyway: mijn hoofdstuk nadert in concept zijn voltooiing. Moet ook wel: vandaag is de deadline.

How E-Learning Policies [..] Keep E-Learning Courses Running Smoothly
Hans van der Meulen heeft ook een nuttig verslag voor ons thema gemaakt. Citaat: "De nieuwe generatie van netwerkende studenten heeft nieuwe digitale sociale ontmoetingsplaatsen gecreëerd. Er ligt een uitdaging om in het onderwijs hiervan gebruik te maken. Een elo zou dus òf een faciliteit in zich moeten hebben om zo'n ontmoetingsplaats te bieden òf moeten kunnen samenwerken met andere applicaties die hierop zijn toegesneden."

Higher Education Insight: The REAL Significance of Blackboard and WebCT
I just came across this website (or is it a weblog?) called Higher Education Insight.
There I found a great article titled "The REAL Significance of Blackboard and WebCT". Some very interesting thoughts in there. One of them:

Open University in the UK will use Moodle
Hot news again: this time we learn that de Open University in the UK will switch to Moodle.
Dean Taylor, the programme manager of the OU’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), says, “We see the development of Moodle applications, along with involvement of the Moodle Open Source community giving our students a great advantage in e-learning. Plus, the innovations added by the OU will be available to the entire Moodle community. It’s a two-way creative street.” Source.
I just read this news on two weblogs: Wilfred Rubens and Stephen Downes. These are two weblogs that you will see in the righthand bar on my Blogroll.

Ook anderen hebben interessante sessies bijgewoond op de Educause. In dit geval Remco Rutten. Hij beschrijft een presentatie van een commissie van Educause. Deze heeft onderzocht welke technologieen de komende paar jaren tot ontwikkeling zullen komen en die veel invloed op het hoger onderwijs zullen hebben. Dit worden (of zijn?) achtereenvolgens: draadloos, portals, uitbesteding van IT, computerspellen, en tools om online samen te werken.

SAKAI discussion - thesis 2 (English)
I learnt at Educause 2005 that titles of blogposts should be informative. I hope this one qualifies.
I would like to test the following assumption:
"Since open source (or community source) is very much on the frontline of developments, it is very likely that their products will adhere to IMS specs very much ahead in time, compared of their commercial competitors." Publicatie Edutrip - deadlines
Het volgende is het tijdschema voor de publicatie van de Edutrip 2005.
Woensdag 2 november: sluitingsdatum EduSite voor verslagen (dus ik verwacht uiterlijk 1 november, 18.00 uur, de definitieve verslagen).
Op vrijdag 11 november moet ik een eerste concept van ons hoofdstuk gereed hebben (ik zal dit ook naar jullie mailen).
Uiterlijk vrijdag 18 november verwacht ik commentaar op 1e concept.
Op maandag 21 november is er een gezamenlijk werk/overlegdag van de Eduguides ten bate van hoofdstukken
En dan moet ik vervolgens op vrijdag 25 november een 2e concept van ons hoofdstuk gereed hebben.
Daarna gaan de opper-eduguides een totaalverslag fabriceren.
Op dinsdag 6 december is die 1e versie van het totaalverslag beschikbaar.

Vanochtend was er een volle zaal (150 personen) bij een enthousiast verhaal van Joseph Hardin, de voorzitter van de Sakai project board. Veel Nederlanders ook in de zaal. Zou dat een voorteken zijn?
Er komt een Sakai Foundation Inc (not for profit) die vanaf volgend jaar de zaken gaat beheren. En geld lijkt geen probleem te zijn, gezien het aantal deelnemers.

Scott McNealy
Hierbij de intro van Scott McNealy: nog steeds zijn er genoeg redenen om je huiswerk niet (op tijd) in te leveren.
Verder ging McNealy in op een aantal interessante kwesties. En vooral de concurrentie moest het ontgelden: HP, IBM, Microsoft en Oracle werden op de hak genomen op verschillende manieren.

Verder vandaag de 'markt' bezocht. Wat een heisa en lawaai! Maar als je er wat tijd voor neemt, kun je bij heel wat firma's een gadget krijgen. Ik zag zelfs bij verschillende stands dat er een iPod nano gewonnen kan worden.
Morgen krijgen we Scott McNealy (SUN) voorgeschoteld.

De days before...
16 en 17 oktober
De vlucht met Delta Airlines naar Atlanta ging voorspoedig. Je moet alleen geen alcohol willen drinken, want dat kost je dan 5 US dollar. Dat is toch wel erg aan de prijs voor een blikje bier! Ik heb geluisterd naar muziek en een boek gelezen (Amerikanen zijn niet gek van Charles Groenhuijsen)
Eenmaal aangekomen in de VS, dus in ons geval in Atlanta, begon het hele veiligheidsritueel met vingerafdrukken en een foto. Ik had nog een groen kaartje van de reis van vorig jaar in mijn paspoort. Nou, daarmee was ik in overtreding. Dat kon vervelende gevolgen hebben. Maar ik mocht het land gelukkig in!
Vervolgens moest je je eigen koffer van de band halen en vervolgens bij een andere band weer afgeven. En toen weer inchecken. Weer een beveiligingscontrole, waarbij die gekke Amerikanen als uit zichzelf de schoenen uittrekken en de riem uit de broek halen. Dat heb ik dus niet gedaan. Wel moet je je laptop apart door het X-ray apparaat laten gaan (in Amsterdam trouwens ook).
Ons hotel kent een beetje een kitscherige uitstraling. Verder is geen draadloos internet in de kamer, zoals ik wel uit de documentatie had begrepen. Er schijnt wel draadloos internet te zijn in de ‘public spaces’, dus de lobby enzo.
Maar dat is allemaal overbodig: we zitten n nu in het Bad Ass cafe, waar het draadloos perfect werkt. En natuurlijk ietsje goedkoper.
Vandaag zijn we naar het Kennedy Space Center geweest. Erg indrukwekkend. Die Amerikanen weten wel een boodschap over te brengen! En die raketten zijn toch wel heel erg groot. De meeste collega’s leken aanvankelijk meer geinteresseerd in alligators die ze zagen in het water.

Interviews en gesprekken gepland
Hoi mensen,
Ik ben de laatste dagen nog bezig geweest om gesprekken/interviews te regelen. En ik ben zelf ook een aantal keren benaderd. Dit is mijn complete schema dat daar uit gekomen is:
1. dinsdag 18 okt, Mike Rebbechi (CIO, Charles Sturt University, Australia), om 2PM bij de Apple booth (1202). Hij wil met mij/ons praten over SAKAI.
2. dinsdag 18 okt, met Hajo Jansen e.a. (Blackboard), om 3 PM bij de Blackboard booth, # 413
3. woensdag 19 okt, met Lucas Heymans e.a. (Oracle), om 6 PM, bij de Oracle booth, diner wordt aangeboden door Oracle
4. Nog te bevestigen: een afspraak met Joseph Hardin (University of Michigan; SAKAI). Hij wil ons graag bijpraten over laatste ontwikkelingen etc.

Over de grenzen...
Verslag “Over de grenzen van de ELO” (28-29 september 2005)
Vooraf
Ik volsta met een kort verslag met verwijzingen naar weblogs.
Dag 1: 28 september
Dit was de massale dag met zo’n 200 deelnemers. Dit geeft in ieder geval duidelijk aan het dat het onderwerp leeft in het Hoger Onderwijs in Nederland, toch?
Wilfred Rubens (Universiteit Utrecht) geeft een goede samenvatting en legt ook erg helder uit wat de voordelen van een service oriented architecture (SOA) en webservices zouden kunnen zijn. Wilfred concludeert dat dit de weg is die we moeten opgaan. Totaal mee eens!
Patrick Klaassen (Universiteit Leiden) concludeert na afloop van de zelfde dag dat opensource producten op het gebied van ELO’s nog niet echt de concurrentie aankunnen met de commerciële aanbieders. Hij mist daarbij met name de finesses van het SAKAI initiatief: dat is niet alleen maar opgezet om een community source ELO te realiseren.
Dag 2: 29 september
Dit was de dag waarvoor je speciaal was uitgenodigd. Een select gezelschap dus, waartoe ik mocht behoren. Ik mocht zelfs nog moderator zijn bij een groepsdiscussie. Marc Dupuis (Universiteit Leiden) geeft een heldere samenvatting van de dag (ook trouwens van de eerste dag): een redelijk aantal aanwezigen zegt dat ze (en hun instelling) eigenlijk zou willen (moeten) streven naar het scenario #2, dat uitgaat van (daar is ‘ie weer!) services: “(..) must result in an overall information architecture comprised of different components linked by open standards and perceives ICT as existential with respect to education.”
Belangrijkste conclusie van Marc, maar ook van enkele anderen, was toch wel: voorlopig kunnen we nog wel even vooruit met onze huidige ELO (in hun geval Blackboard), maar nadenken voor de wat langere termijn is wel dringend noodzakelijk. En voor de langere termijn moet het gaan om een stabiele informatie-architectuur die zeer waarschijnlijk service-oriented moet zijn.
Overigens, collega Eelco Laagland wees mij zojuist op een voorloper. De TU Eindhoven heeft al een aardig idee (en uitwerking?) hoe dat dan zou kunnen werken. Frank Vercoulen hield hierover een presentatie op ALT-C.
En waarom moeten we dan nu echt gaan denken in architecturen? Daar zijn twee hoofdredenen voor, denk ik: (a) de huidige studenten zien door de bomen het bos niet meer, en roepen allemaal om integratie van de bestaande systemen en (b) het nieuwe, veel meer vraaggestuurde, onderwijs wordt gewoonweg niet ondersteund door bijna alle huidige ELO’s, die uitgaan van concepten als een docent, een klas en een lokatie.

Bijeenkomsten zijn altijd goed om kennis op te doen, maar vooral ook kennissen. Ik heb erg leuk gepraat met onder andere Erik Saaman (“hogescholen en universiteiten zouden eigenlijk wel kunnen stoppen met het aanbieden van email voor hun studenten”), Harm Weistra (“het gebruik van ELO’s door de gemiddelde docent is nog ver beneden de mogelijkheden”; dank voor je hulp bij het modereren van de discussie), Cas Egelie (“waarom is een grootschalige verandering in een hoger onderwijsinstelling een onmogelijkheid?”; dank voor je goede verkoop van scenario #1) en Jas Suurmond (“kom gerust eens een keer langs om onze ELO op basis van Microsoft Sharepoint te bekijken”). En ja, nu moet ik natuurlijk wel volledig zijn, dus ik noem ook nog even Frank, Pierre, Wilfred, Henry, Wim, Fred, Eric, Heino (“heb je wel eens met Alexander in de bus gezeten?”) en Marja.

Leesvoer :: WTR-advies SURF-Meerjarenplan 2007-2010 ‘Kiezen en delen’
Interessant leesvoer van de WTR, zeker ook voor ons thema. Een paar aanbevelingen die ik hier uit haal:
- informatie-architectuur wordt steeds belangrijker, voor individuele instellingen, maar ook instellingsoverstijgend
- standaarden voor gegevensuitwisseling zijn onmisbaar
- we moeten streven naar een SOA (Service Oriented Architecture)
- de studentenpopulatie wordt heterogener en daarop moeten wij inspelen (ook hier weer die boodschap...)
- informatie-architectuur wordt steeds belangrijker, voor individuele instellingen, maar ook instellingsoverstijgend
- standaarden voor gegevensuitwisseling zijn onmisbaar
- we moeten streven naar een SOA (Service Oriented Architecture)
- de studentenpopulatie wordt heterogener en daarop moeten wij inspelen (ook hier weer die boodschap...)

Probleemstellingen bijgewerkt!
Ik heb op de EduSite de beschrijving van ons thema, met bijbehorende probleemstellingen, aangepast. Ik heb de derde probleemstelling laten vervallen en de vierde probleemstelling lichtelijk aangepast (wil ik er toch wel graag inlaten, ook gezien jullie reacties). "The 21st-century learner multitasks, expects instant gratification, is visually oriented, and communicates via e-mail and chat. In this seminar, we will define who these new learners are and how we can adjust our teaching in order to serve them. Interactive computer-based materials will demonstrate learning options for new learners."

The University of Richmond, working with Tufts University on an Institute for Museum and Library Services-funded newspaper digitization project, has developed strategies, work flows, and tools that will help smaller institutions build successful and cost-effective digital libraries, not only as an end in itself, but as a prudent path to the development of successful digital repositories.

Building a Collaborative Digital Preservation Network
This presentation will feature co-principal investigators of The MetaArchive of Southern Digital Culture as well as a representative of the Library of Congress. They will discuss the Library of Congress's National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) and the first year (2004-2005) of the MetaArchive Collaborative Digital Preservation Network, which was formed under the auspices of the congressionally mandated NDIIPP program.

We were all waiting for it. And finally it is there: the Itinerary Builder.
There's one prerequisite: you need to have an Educause profile. But I would really recommend to create one. You can also subscribe to periodic alerts on all kinds of subjects once you have a profile, and you have access to (almost) all content that Educause offers.
One last remark: you can't access profiles of others unless you have a profile yourself!

Meeting the Net Generation
I won't copy what others already have put online. Today I visited the DigiDiscover conference at Windesheim University of Professional Education. Just check Wilfred or otherwise read Wijnand. Both weblogs are in Dutch.
The theme today was Meeting the Net Generation. There is at least one preconference on Educause 2005 that will address this theme. It is called Addressing the Needs of the 21st-Century Learner (Separate registration and fee is required to attend this seminar).

Very laborintensive task
I just created a second post with my picks for the Oct 19 conference day. I must say that this takes a lot of work. Too much, actually!
It seems to me that there is an urgent need for some sort of mechanism on the conference website whereby I could search through the database of all preconferences and sessions. But there isn't, as far as i can see. Why not use tags or the like? That's why I love Flickr.com or del.icio.us so much. They really have thought about the ease of use of their services.
Is anyone listening? Anyone agree? Suggestions?

Open-standards Web technology allows institutions to provide storage accessible "from any place, at any time, to anyone" (with appropriately authenticated authorization). We will present and compare three universities' (Boston College; University of California, Irvine; and University of Texas at Austin) deployments of such services, based on the WebDAV protocol, to meet differing institutional needs and constituencies.
Transformations: Mount Holyoke's Class Project Becomes a Digital Archive
Mount Holyoke College will present a case study of a faculty-initiated and grant-funded digital project that was developed into a sustainable digital resource by multiple departments. The panelists (archivist, library systems manager, and network manager) will offer a successful tale of open and collaborative work using minimal resources.
Developing Legal and Policy Frameworks to Sustain Digital Scholarship
Scholars producing complex born-digital scholarship need new models of institutional support, including different distribution channels for finished projects. Libraries are thus expanding their roles beyond archiving to include technical and legal developmental support and dissemination. What policy frameworks are needed when we commit to stable, long-term collection of digital scholarship?

Oct 19, day 1: Enterprise computing & infosystems
Here's is a first batch of interesting sessions on Educause 2005 (no seperate preregistration required) for the theme Enterprise computing & information systems. I found the program overwhelming and very comprehensive!
Anyway: here comes my first batch, that can be seen from 10:30 a.m. 'till 11:20 a.m on October 19/
1. An community source ERP
ERP is the realm of large vendors, right? Only the crazy would try to play in that space. Well, some crazies are doing just that with the Kuali initiative. A panel of representatives from six partner organizations will discuss the factors that led them to join this initiative.
2. It Was a Dark and Stormy . . . Eight Weeks! Maintaining Critical IT Services During the 2004 Hurricane Season
This session will highlight how Computer Services & Telecommunications at the University of Central Florida managed university IT operations and infrastructure during three hurricanes over a period of eight weeks.
3. Listening to the Client: Connecting IT and the Academy
IT leaders assume what is best for the academy without real validation. MIT and Stanford completed collaborative client satisfaction surveys that also created new performance measures, exploded "myths" of what mattered, created new campus dialogue, and reset strategy. We will present the survey, the process, and specific tactical and strategic actions.
4. Leveraging Guest Accounts for Ubiquitous Web Sign-On System Acceptance
We will present Cosign Friend, a scalable, flexible, and lightweight guest account mechanism implemented in conjunction with our Web single sign-on system at the University of Michigan. We address the need for guest accounts at a large university, our requirements gathering process, and the implications of our design choices.
5. TechConnect: Student-to-Student Technical Help
TechConnect is an innovative student-to-student distributed help desk focused on student needs. The TechConnect coordinators are student employees who work in campus labs and provide technical help, answer questions about registration and financial aid, and assist students to fulfill class assignments that incorporate technology.
Anyway: here comes my first batch, that can be seen from 10:30 a.m. 'till 11:20 a.m on October 19/
1. An community source ERP
ERP is the realm of large vendors, right? Only the crazy would try to play in that space. Well, some crazies are doing just that with the Kuali initiative. A panel of representatives from six partner organizations will discuss the factors that led them to join this initiative.
2. It Was a Dark and Stormy . . . Eight Weeks! Maintaining Critical IT Services During the 2004 Hurricane Season
This session will highlight how Computer Services & Telecommunications at the University of Central Florida managed university IT operations and infrastructure during three hurricanes over a period of eight weeks.
3. Listening to the Client: Connecting IT and the Academy
IT leaders assume what is best for the academy without real validation. MIT and Stanford completed collaborative client satisfaction surveys that also created new performance measures, exploded "myths" of what mattered, created new campus dialogue, and reset strategy. We will present the survey, the process, and specific tactical and strategic actions.
4. Leveraging Guest Accounts for Ubiquitous Web Sign-On System Acceptance
We will present Cosign Friend, a scalable, flexible, and lightweight guest account mechanism implemented in conjunction with our Web single sign-on system at the University of Michigan. We address the need for guest accounts at a large university, our requirements gathering process, and the implications of our design choices.

A good example of a project aiming at the establishment of a learning materials repository is JORUM. It provides access to materials and encourages the sharing, re-use and re-purposing of them between teaching staff. More information.

CETIS-The Case for Creative Commons Textbooks
Creative Commons is getting more and more attention as a means by which we can free ourselves from those publishers that are charging us ridicous amounts of money for their journals and for their educational content.
For example, read the article The Case for Creative Commons Textbooks on the very informative website by CETIS.
It is stipulated that University of California students paid an average of $898 per year on new and used textbooks in 2003. The author (Fred M. Beshears, U.C. Berkeley) argues that in a best case scenario textbook costs can be reduced to $3.25 per year!
That gives us something to think about!

Information resources, digital content and libraries: Interesting preconferences
For those of the Surf Edutrip 2005 who choose for theme Infrastructure, digital content and libraries I recommend to join the following preconferences:
Seminar 02A - Advanced Issues in Copyright Law: Copyright and Distributed Learning
This seminar is especially interesting when dealing with re-use of learning material. Hopefully we get some insight in the juridical possibilities and constraints for depositing, publishing and using learning material.
Seminar 08A - Knowledge Management and Leadership: Do We Know What We Know?
How to retrieve and share knowledge and information more effectively? For our theme a somewhat general question but it can offer a framework for developing services and tools.

EduStandaard: the Dutch organisation (or should I say foundation?) that is heavily involved in learning technology standards. The site is only available in the Dutch language, at the time of writing is.

TALL: mapping VLE's on ELF
ELF has a very comprehensive website, which is located on www.elframework.org. It is sometimes hard to find the real gems in there. But i found something very interesting.
The Oxford University conducted the TALL Desk Study whereby they actually conducted a mapping of existing VLE's on the JISC E-Learning Framework. I haven't had the time to read it all, but it sounds very interesting as a preparation for our Edutrip. Recommended reading!

If not open source, then Shibboleth
Auricle is a very nice example of a weblog on learning technologies in Higher Education. Auricle is edited by Derek Morrison, Director of the e-learning@Bath team. Auricle is called a "private collaborative Weblog (blog) (..) as a mechanism for communicating interesting information or problems and resolutions amongst the team."
In this recent post on Shibboleth they highlight very clearly why this new technology is so much needed.
